The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has urged employers and the government to do more to monitor work-related road accidents. It maintains that occupational road risk should be scrutinised as heavily as general health and safety procedures.
These views are based on recommendations outlined in a report RoSPA commissioned from the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) and the Centre for Transport Studies at University College London (UCL).
The report called for businesses to place more emphasis on providing effective risk management for workers whose roles require them to use the road, and also suggested that data recording methods used by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and police forces could be improved.
Since 2006, around 30% of deaths and 22% of serious injuries on the road involved at least one at-work driver. This figure does not include commuters.
TRL head of transport psychology, Dr Shaun Helman, said that closer monitoring of work-related road risk was crucial to help reduce the overall number of traffic accidents.
RoSPA hopes that the findings will encourage companies to be proactive rather than reactive when it comes to road safety and convince them of the legal and ethical reasons to do so. There are also economical factors to consider, as the report shows how better journey planning can help to cut fuel costs.
