What to do if you collide with an uninsured driver

Recently uncovered information has suggested that there are still many people driving on UK roads without insurance.

Through a Freedom of Information request to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), motoring magazine Auto Express discovered that around 10,000 drivers are banned every year for not being properly insured.

According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), there are over 225,000 drivers in the country who have points on their licence for driving without insurance.

By law, all drivers are required to have a third party insurance policy at the very least. Sadly a fraction of motorists do not adhere to this requirement, and in doing so they put other drivers at risk.

Do uninsured drivers affect the victim’s ability to claim?

When you are hit by another driver in any road traffic accident and begin the claims process, their details are checked in the Motor Insurance Database to ascertain whether or not they have a policy.

If the driver is not insured, your claim is directed towards the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB). The same goes if the driver who hit you drove off without stopping and swapping details. In the latter instance, it is extremely important that you note down the vehicle’s registration, as the driver may then be traced.
