Manchester City Council has been fined £15,000 after a worker was run over at 70mph while on duty. The court decided that the horrific injuries sustained by the employee could have been avoided if the council had provided him with a higher standard of training and supervision.
The 60-year-old cleaner from Stretford was hit while out picking up litter on Princess Parkway near the Mancunian Way. He was reportedly knocked several feet in the air and suffered four cracked ribs, a broken pelvis, a fractured eye socket, a collapsed lung and lacerations to the liver.
He was placed in intensive care for three days, remaining in hospital for a further six weeks, and missed his son’s wedding due to the extent of his injuries.
In addition to blaming the council, Judge Maurice Greene ruled the driver was most at fault in the incident, as he was travelling at 70mph in a 30mph zone.
Judge Greene added that the collision could have been avoided had the council implemented simple traffic control measures such as cones. Details on any claims made on behalf of the victim have not been disclosed in the media.
This council worker was unfortunate enough to not only be the victim of an accident at work but also a road traffic accident as well, giving him the opportunity to pursue two different sorts of claims.
