Cyclist films commute to raise awareness of negligent driving

A Manchester commuter who cycles to and from work every day has begun filming examples of negligent driving and posting them on YouTube under the alias ‘MCR Cyclist’.

The 24-year-old Rusholme resident says his aim is to bring about improvements in the behaviour of motorists towards cyclists, and believes the footage he captures on his helmet’s camera can help achieve this.

He says that in past instances, some drivers have contacted him and apologised after seeing the incidents from his perspective on YouTube.

“If I get just one driver to change their ways – and potentially save a cyclist or pedestrian from harm – then what I’m doing is worth it,” he explains.

According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), 2013 saw 19,438 reported road traffic accidents in which a cyclist was injured. 3,143 of these cases resulted in injuries that were classed as serious, while 109 resulted in cyclist fatalities.

Motorists emerging into and turning across the paths of cyclists were among the two most common types of bicycle accidents. Hospital data revealed that more than 40% of cyclist casualties suffered head injuries.
